Confused about whether you can drive a car and trailer? Answer If you passed your driving test before 1/1/1997 you can tow a trailer If you passed on or after 1/1/1997 you can't tow a trailer Note: you may still tow a very small trailer up to 750kg gross weight with any car or van and also a car and trailer combination with a gross weight under 3500kg. This excludes most 4x4's towing a large trailer such as a horse box trailer or caravan because they weigh more than 3500kg combined gross weight (car plus trailer).
